Fishing and hunting are two survival skills you’ll need to perfect to keep yourself fed and full of strength to face whatever challenges the freaky island of Sons of the Forest has in store for you. Although you can do it the old-fashioned way with a bow and arrow or a spear, this new survival horror game allows you to create contraptions and traps to do the hunting for you so you can devote that time to exploring the island and discovering new things.
In this guide, we’ll teach you how to build and properly use a Fish Trap to catch fish!
Sons of the Forest: How to Use Fish Trap to Catch Fish
To make a Fish Trap, all you’ll need is a handful of sticks, twenty-five to be exact. You shouldn’t have any issue gathering sticks because you can find two with every step you take in the forest. After you have enough, go to a lake or river where you can observe fish swimming and follow the steps below to create the trap in a suitable spot:
- Press’ B’ on the keyboard to bring up the Guide Booklet and hold ‘X’ to switch menus.
- Locate the Traps section (1st bookmark from the bottom) and select Fish Trap.
- The trap’s ‘blueprint’ should now show on your screen. Place it where you want your fish trap to be and confirm with a left click. You can also use the ‘rotate’ keys to ensure that the opening is facing the correct way. If you set a trap in a river, make sure the opening faces upstream so that the fish swim into it rather than around it!
- Press and hold ‘E’ to construct the trap by using the sticks from your inventory.
Return to your trap regularly to ensure there is always room for another naïve fish to become captured. But don’t panic if you don’t see any fish trapped in your perfect little fish trap! Sadly, there appears to be a bug in the game that prevents the fish trap from working for many players. You must use the alternate methods to catch fish until the developers resolve this issue in a future patch:
- Ask Kelvin (nicely) to fetch you some.
- Craft a Spear and go fishing yourself! Make sure to crouch to prevent scaring away the fish.
