Insomniac Games Breaks Silence: Official Statement Post Major Cyberattack & Data Leak

News

In the aftermath of a major ransomware attack that shook the gaming industry, Insomniac Games, the studio behind blockbuster titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank, has broken its silence with an official statement. The studio took to X (Twitter) to express gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans during this challenging period.

In the statement, Insomniac acknowledged the “extremely distressing experience” caused by the cyberattack and leaked information. The studio revealed, “We’re both saddened and angered about the recent criminal cyberattack on our studio and the emotional toll it’s taken on our team. We have focused inwardly for several days to support each other.”

The cyberattack was orchestrated by the ransomware group Rhysida, the same gang responsible for stealing personal data from the British Library earlier in the month. The attackers demanded a $2 million ransom in Bitcoin from Sony, setting a one-week deadline. Sony chose not to yield to the blackmail, and as a result, Rhysida proceeded to leak a substantial amount of confidential data and sensitive information online.

The leaked data, totaling an unprecedented 1.6TB, included internal business plans, budget information, and employee details. Notably, the leaked content also included gameplay footage and a playable early development build of Insomniac’s highly anticipated project, Marvel’s Wolverine.

Insomniac Games' official statement, posted on X, as a response to the recent cyberattack on the studio.

Despite the setback, Insomniac reassured fans about the future of Marvel’s Wolverine, stating, “…like Logan, Insomniac is resilient. Marvel’s Wolverine continues as planned. The game is in early production and will no doubt greatly evolve throughout development, as do all our plans.”

The statement concluded with a note of appreciation: “On behalf of Insomniac, thank you for your ongoing support during this challenging time.”
